Alfonso brings over 15 years of capacity-building experience in planning, implementing and managing public health programs for marginalized and hard-to-reach populations served by community-based clinics, social service organizations and public health entities such as city and state health departments. He also serves as a senior staff trainer providing training on cultural competency, male involvement in family planning, risk-reduction behavior change models, and HIV prevention programs for minority colleges and universities in the Southwest.
Alfonso is Mexican-American and was raised in East Los Angeles, California. He has been living in Austin, Texas for the past 25 years and enjoys landscaping and home remodeling projects. He has spent the past several years studying the dynamics of racism, sexism and homophobia with StirFry and is committed to providing effective diversity training to healthcare workers who are increasingly becoming a reflection of the diversity within their communities.
Alfonso believes that while personal attitudes, beliefs and perceptions can be positively influenced by training, etc. service organizations also have an organizational service delivery culture that is being influenced by social change factors, and conducting periodic organizational assessments will insure that the infrastructure that supports clients also supports the caregiver in giving the best care they can give.
